Happy Spring!  Time for Some Fun!

We’ve got all the fun events at your favorite neighborhood park!

Toddlers & Puppies

Saturday, April 9th, 3:00 - 4:15 PM

Dogpatch Arts Plaza (Indiana & 19th, across from Esprit Park).

Refreshments will be provided.

We’ve all seen it. There’s been an explosion of toddlers and puppies in Dogpatch! With the end of sheltering in place, there’s a new world for both to explore and interact.

In response to FOEP members - families with little ones, families with pups, and families with both - we have partnered with Larry Johnson, owner of K9 Comrades, to design and deliver workshops focused on safety, best practices and having fun while we share space in our wonderful Esprit Park. Larry, a trainer for the SFPD Tactical K9 Unit, has over 20 years experience training families and their pets.
Limit: 34 people.

 RSVP FOR TODDLERS & PUPPIES

Esprit Park Rehabilitation: Project Status

Timing: On November 18, 2021, SF Rec and Park Department (RecPark) announced a project construction start date of Q3 2022, and an end date of Q3 2023. (Original construction start date: Q3 2020. Published October 2018.) RecPark will close the entire park during construction.  Any changes to that strategy will be conveyed via RecPark’s quarterly community engagement meeting, or you can reach out directly to the RecPark Rehabilitation project manager, Melinda Sullivan.

Funding: On November 15, 2021, RecPark requested $800,000 from the Eastern Neighborhoods Community Advisory Committee (EN CAC) to cover an expected budget increase for the project due to delays and inflation. On the same date, the EN CAC voted to allocate $800,000 of impact fees (the “Gap Funding“) for Central Waterfront Recreation and Open Space projects to the Esprit Park renovation project. Along with the funding, EN CAC has formally requested that  - via a unanimously approved Memo - RecPark engage in robust, community-centered outreach, particularly when modifications are needed for budgetary reasons, and hold quarterly community meetings to keep stakeholders apprised of developments.

The Gap Funding is in addition to $2,711,000 of impact fees specifically appropriated and transferred to the Recreation and Park Department (“RecPark“), and a $5 million grant from UCSF, both announced in 2017. This brings the projected and fully funded cost of the Esprit Park rehabilitation, focused on ground cover, drainage, sprinklers and forestry, to $8.5 million.

Enhance safety and accessibility for Esprit Park users and neighbors.

Do you find that one-hour street parking along the perimeter of Esprit Park is too restrictive? Concerned about two-way traffic forced into a single lane along Minnesota St., placing pedestrians, bicyclists, and car drivers in harm’s way? SFMTA wants to hear from you.

Here’s your opportunity to make changes!

SFMTA is open to increasing the parking time limit around Esprit Park to 2 hours, giving us time to enjoy a birthday party without racing to move the car in the middle of serving cake or monitoring children playing in a bouncy house.

Your call to action:

Just send a quick note to: eillie.anzilotti@sfmta.com , Shannon.Hake@sfmta.com, and  Jonathan.Chimento@sfmta.com letting them know that you support increasing the parking time limit to 2 hours along the four perimeter streets of Esprit Park, and would like Minnesota St. to once again safely accommodate legal two-way traffic.

Strike a Pose!

Submit photos of you and others #LovingEspritPark. Every month, we’ll highlight a few on the FoEP website. What have we seen recently?

  • Birthday bashes

  • Runners jogging on the oval path around the park

  • Organized groups of preschoolers sitting on blankets in the meadow, enjoying outdoor activities

  • Strength training workouts

  • Friends meeting up for a mid-afternoon chat and a stroll

  • Toddlers watching the latest episode of “Doggie TV”

  • Frisbee tournaments

  • Martial arts demos

  • People reading on benches while sipping their morning coffee
