SF Public Works wants to remove 38 mature trees on Minnesota St

Emergency Tree Removal Hearing: Monday, Oct. 24th, 5:30 PM

Please attend the Emergency Tree Removal Hearing for the 700 block of Minnesota St. (the east side of the park).

When:  Monday, Oct. 24th, 5:30 PM, via video conference, held by Bureau of Urban Forestry/San Francisco Public Works.

Why: Protest removal of thirty-eight (38) trees at 700 Minnesota St. under the authority of SF Public Works of which more than thirty (30+) are healthy. Their proposed replacements are thirty-five (35) 24 or 36-inch (2 or 3 feet) trees spread along four frontages on Indiana St., Minnesota St., 19th and 20th Sts.

How: Speak your mind and make your comments! Have some questions? Have some thoughts? This issue needs community input before the tree removal starts in a few weeks!

Comments received before the hearing will be brought to the attention of the hearing officer and made a part of the official public record.

Process for community protest
Given the speed with which the first hearing was scheduled, assume the shorter end of cycle times below:

1. Send protest emails to the Bureau of Urban Forestry/SF Public Works.

2. BUF/PW schedules a tree removal hearing. The initiation of this process puts a stay on tree removal, meaning no city agency can pull a permit to remove the trees.

3. A hearing has been scheduled for Monday Oct. 24th (way faster than the norm of 4-6  weeks after the notification period ends).

4. BUF/PW issues a decision 2-4 weeks later.  

5. The community has 15 days to file an appeal of that decision.

6. BUF/PW  schedules a second hearing, usually two months out. 

7. Numbers matter: the more neighbors sending letters and attending hearings, the more attention will be paid.
